GreenBelt Graveyard - Ariana Fig
GreenBelt Graveyard is a sound and video collage that aims to critique the provincial government of Ontario’s environmental politics, specifically addressing Doug Ford’s connection to the GreenBelt. The GreenBelt is the world's largest protected land, protecting farmland, lakes, forests, wetlands and rivers. In the fall of 2022, Ford's government campaigned for the GreenBelt to be carved out for wealthy members of Toronto's community that have personal ties to Ford. This critique shows how quickly our communities came together to make sure Bill 23 was repealed and Ford's outrageous desires could not come into fruition. This collage utilizes field recordings, vocal textures, modulated synthesis, audio sampling, photo sampling, and videography. Inspired by Jane Bennett’s Thing Power (2010), GreenBelt Graveyard explores the concept of what thing power sounds like during moments of environmental racism.
